You have been hired as a Sustainability/ESG Analyst at Bloomburb Investments.
You have been placed in a Team to analyze a Group of Companies in a specific Industry
You will advise your boss:
1. Are each of the assigned companies:
- Sustainability/ESG Leaders
- Sustainability/ESG Middle of the Pack
- Sustainability/ESG Laggards
2. What recommendations do you have for improvement of each company's ESG Rating.
The Steps in your Analysis Process:
1. Identify Key Stakeholders of your Company in the assigned Industry to determine the Drivers for Stakeholder Engagement, Benefits, Risks and Stakeholder Engagement Objectives. (Assignment 2 - Stakeholder Mapping) (DONE)
2. Complete a CSR/Sustainability Standards Comparison of for your Company (CSR/Sustainability Standards Comparison Assignment). (DONE)
3. Evaluate the Sustainability Reports of the 3 assigned companies to:
a. Determine each of the three company's Material Topics, Risks and Opportunities, and compare and contrast them with the SASB Material Topics for the Industry, Materiality Maps provided by the rating agency (MSCI) and other Best Practices Material Topics, Risks and Opportunities for the Industry based on research. (WORKSHEET 1) Class 9
b. Determine the targets (Credible Goals) and progress they have set for their Material ESG Factors and evaluate, using the Embedding Project Goals Tool, whether these targets make the company a Leader, Laggard or Middle of the Pack company. (WORKSHEET 2) Class 10
c. Provide a written assessment of Environmental, Social and Governance strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of each company's ESG's performance. (Presentation and Final Report)
4. Investigate the company's activities to uncover any controversial issues. Research should include: 1) News within the last year, 2) Investor resolutions tabled at company Annual General Meetings for the company and its peers, 3) Recent legislation or legal decisions impacting the industry, 4) Annual reports by companies and industry associations, and 5) CEO Presentations and Speeches. (WORKSHEET 3) Class 11
5. Score the ESG Rating of the 3 companies based on the data you have collected and information you have gained using an ESG spreadsheet provided by your Instructor. (ESG RATING SHEET) Class 12
6. Provide a set of 1) Short term (within 6 months), 2) Medium Term (6 months to 3 years) and 3) Long Term (3+ years) for each company that would result in an improved ESG score. Presentation & Final Report
7. Present your findings to the Investment Board and hand in an ESG Report summarizing your findings and recommendations. Presentation and Final Report
8. The Table of Contents for your final report and presentation should include:
1. Executive Summary including Leader, Laggard, Middle of the Pack decision and recommendations for each company.
2. Material Topics
3. Credible Goals Analysis
4. Controversial Issues Analysis
5. SWOT Analysis of ESG Assessments
6. Final ESG Rating and Explanation/Justification of Scores
7. Recommendations for Improvement
The final report should be no more than 20 pages, 12 pt, double spaced.
