Assertiveness Exercise
Purpose: It may not always be easy but being assertive is very important as a nurse! Assertiveness is not being rude or pushy, it is clearly stating what you need or want while considering the position of the others involved. It is a skill that takes practice, but it can be learned. You need this skill to advocate for your clients and their loved ones, and for yourself.
Identify a current situation in their lives where an increase in assertiveness skills would be useful. This can be at home, at work, at school, or in your social life. To complete the assignment, you need to:
1. Summarize the current situation which you would like to change utilizing your assertiveness skills.
2. Give a brief analysis of your intrapersonal response. This should include your thoughts and feelings and how your role in this setting impacts your behavior.
3. Detail your plan. How will your response change when you incorporate assertiveness skills? What is the verbatim statement you plan to use? What will your assertive nonverbal behavior look like?
4. Give a verbatim, back-and-forth account of the interaction: What you said, the person's response, your reply, etc.
5. Describe your intrapersonal response - the thoughts and feelings you had while the interaction was occurring.
6. Evaluate the interaction including your verbal AND nonverbal communication. What went well? What would you change to better assert your needs if you were to have this conversation again?
7. Describe what you learned from this experience.
