TRAUMA AND RESILENCE
Assessment - Analysis of trauma informed practice. Dialogue with a client and reflection on social engagement and interpersonal skills.
Learning Outcome 1: Utilise relevant concepts and theories from professional literature in practice situations involving trauma
Learning Outcome 2: Identify and implement various appropriate interventions to help client work on trauma
Learning Outcome 3: Recognise the indicators of post-traumatic stress disorder and various strengths, resources and resilience among people experiencing trauma
Purpose:
It is important that social workers know how to apply trauma informed care. During the intensive you will have gained insight and understanding of trauma theory, interpersonal neurobiology and heard from experts talk about experiences of violence, abuse, adversity, and trauma. This assessment provides you with the opportunity to practice with a colleague using skills in trauma informed care, both verbal and nonverbal. Research has shown that a positive first response and being relational are key factors in a client continuing to seek support.
Criteria:
Comprehensive reflection on your 10-minute trauma informed dialogue with a client
An understanding of the traumatic experience (discuss in your reflection) e.g., family violence, child abuse
Ability to create safety and stability
Articulate how you were relational during the dialogue
Use of strengths and resilience knowledge and language with the client
Social engagement skills and how they were applied
01. Discussion demonstrates reflexivity of the ten-minute recorded session with a ‘client' who has experienced trauma. Demonstrated understanding of the impact of a traumatic experience/s.
Outstanding reflective discussion with demonstrated understanding of the impact of trauma on the client. Reference to relevant theory in relation to the client scenario.
02. Articulation of trauma informed principles in practice, with reference to strengths/resilience theory and a clear rationale for using a phased based approach.
Exemplarily explanation of trauma informed principles, phase-based approach and strengths and resilience based theory to the practice scenario. Excellent reflective critique of areas for development in practice.
03. Social Engagement skills articulated -verbal & non-verbal. Articulation of how you established safety and stability. Articulation of how you developed a relational approach with the client. Polyvagal and nervous system awareness - presence and attunement must be discussed
Exemplarily discussion detailing key social engagement practices. Abiliity to highlight and discuss the importance of safety and relationship in trauma informed practice
