Planning Commission Meeting Attendance and Written Report (1 deliverable* = 15 Points)

*Written report will summarize and synthesize assigned readings and lecture materials covered in class with your experience of the meeting, relating it to specific textbook topics.

Each student will be required to attend a meeting of a city or county planning commission, airport land use commission, Local Agency Formation Commission, Environmental Evaluation Committee, regional planning agency, or association of government. A current list of local commissions is located on Blackboard, under the 'Course Documents' link.

After attending and carefully observing this meeting, each student will be required to write the analysis and critique of the meeting with the following information:

Overview of the purpose/function of the governing body (found on the local government's website);
Overview (in your words, not what is printed on the published agenda) of two agenda items addressing planning policy or issues that involved input/communication from members of the public;
Analysis of the role of one or more public administrators (non-elected "staff" positions) in relation to the elected officials in influencing the outcome of your featured agenda items;
Analysis of one or more members of the public in relation to influencing the outcome of your featured agenda items; and,
Critical review of the meeting's representation of the democratic process in local government.
