This finding is consistent with those of other studies that suggest that the younger generation typically has higher career aspirations and is therefore more likely to undertake further training.
A total of 80 questionnaires were distributed to Behavioral Medicine, OB ward, Dialysis unit, Cancer unit, SICU, Ortho ward, surgery ward, and Pedia ward, with a 40% response rate. Most CVMC nurses are women. Thus, most of the study's participants were women. Most respondents were aged 29-39.
When responders were grouped by seniority, two groups dominated; those who had 1-2 years and more that 15 years of work experience.
Many respondents were not in managerial or supervisory roles at the time of the survey. Thus, general staff outnumber managerial staff in these chosen units. 29% of which are contractual employees, while the rest are in permanent position .
Of the nurses, 100% had undergone previous work-related training for the past 3 years; of these, 85% said that the trainings have contributed to their professional development. Only 21% of the respondents do not plan on pursuing any higher education in the next 5 years. None of them has stated any explanation on for not pursuing higher education while those who are interested stated that they needed it for professional growth and development.
The top 3 strengths tallied were: Good Communication skills, Compassionate and Hard working. While the weaknesses include lack of specialized training, difficulty reading doctor's order and being sensitive.
Among the self-reported assessment of skills, it is interpersonal communication that garnered the highest score (4), followed by both written communication and organizational skills (3.8), then by computing skills and numeracy and lastly a tie between public speaking and Team management. Therefore, the nurses have good communication skills on both interpersonal and written but has difficulty in public speaking and management of team.
Most respondents required most professional needs in terms of Customer Service Skills, Health and Safety and training needs in research competencies associated with the department they are working at. All their needs are all geared into self-development for better patient care and service. These suggest that they would prefer any type of training that concentrates more on how to handle hostile clients or relatives and things that are related into that aspect. They also need a more advance training for health and safety in the workplace and the likes, as well as current advanced practices in the department they have been assigned.
