Topic - Gender Models

Conduct a content analysis of the media as an agency of socialization, using children's books. These books (Bernstein Bears and Little Golden books) are perhaps the first ones we read at a young age. If you don't have access to books you can watch Little Golden Books for children like Lion King, Aladdin, Toy Story, Mulan, Pocahontas etc. or watch Berenstein Bears cartoon on Youtube.

Goal:

1. To look for gender messages in the books/show/movie. What gender ideologies are embedded in popular children's media?

2. Connect gender ideologies to gender inequalities in workplace, occupation, income and education.

What to look for?

1. Number of male models and female models (main characters).

2. Theme, Words, Color, Pictures, Title - See if there is a traditional gender dichotomy. (Look at stereotypes sheet). Look for specific behaviors associated with stereotypes. Check out couple of main characters; possibly one male and one female.

For this assignment you are required to do the following:

1. Give a brief summary of your findings.

2. Additionally, address how gender socialization translates to inequalities we find in society. Choose any two of of the following key terms.

The terms need to be explained as you apply them
