Assignment:

For this discussion use your own experience or some other 'case' example as the basis of your analysis of societal reaction-based theories of crime. The case could be a personal acquaintance, family member, or a relatively well-known public figure; anyone you have sufficient information about to apply the theories from the week. Please note that, if you are reflecting on your own experiences or someone close to you, you should not provide any details you feel uncomfortable about making public.

Describe an instance or instances where you (or your case) were punished in some way for some kind of rule infraction or delinquent or criminal act. Consider both formal criminal justice responses and other informal responses from parents, teacher, coaches or other people.

Discuss the qualities of this punishment as it relates to the societal reaction-based theories we are examining this week. In general, how would these theories have interpreted the punishment experience? To what extent do you view the punishment as labeling, stigmatizing or unfair versus re-integrative or fair? Why? Next, discuss the reaction to the punishment. To what extent did it affect your behavior? Do you feel as though this case "fits" or supports the theories' propositions? Why or why not?
