Critical Response Memos
You will complete two critical response memos for Soc. 230. Use APA or ASA referencing.
Use the relevant course lectures and text readings to assist you in developing your memo. Reference this material in the body of the memo.
Description:
Critical Response memos should include the following:
1) A statement of the research question(s) that each author expressly or implicitly seeks to answer;
2) A statement of how the author answers the question, such as using a theoretical argument or through empirical methods;
3) An analysis of how effective the research is at achieving its stated objectives (the strengths and weaknesses of the research).
Do not summarize the readings. Instead, provide an analysis that digs into the "so what" question to identify the significance of this work.
Purpose:
The response paper shows that a student is able to critically analyze a work instead of just reading it and composing a restatement or summary. A memo requires the student to explore a work while arguing to validate his/her/their response.
Readings to review and due dates:
First memo is on Marwick, A. & boyd, d. (2014). Networked Privacy: How teenagers negotiate context in social media. New media and Society, 16 (7), 1051-1067 is due Feb. 24 by 5pm.
Second memo is on Thoits, P. (2010). Stress and Health: Major Findings and Policy Implications. Journal of Health and Social Behavior, 51, Special Issue: S41-S53 is due March 23 by 5pm.
