Part 1
A sample of sodium bicarbonate was tested. The observations and conclusion are listed in the table below.
1. Summarise the conclusion for this sample. Enter your response in the boxes underneath the table.
a) type of bonding
b) properties that support your bonding choice
c) unexpected properties for this bonding type, if any
Type of bonding: Choose an item.
Properties that led to bonding choice:

List any properties that do not fit with the bonding type and provide a brief explanation.
Part 2
A boltwas tested. The observations are recorded in the table below.
1. Complete the table with the conclusion for each property. Choose from the drop down menu.
2. Summarise the conclusion for this sample. Enter your response in the boxes underneath the table.

c) unexpected properties for this bonding type, if any
Part 3: Analysis of common substances.
A range of different substances are listed in 5 groups in the table below.

Plastic bag
Plastic soft drink or water bottle
|
Plastic peg or ruler or cutlery

|
Group 5
|
Sand
Rock or stone
|
Concrete

Choose one substance from each group and analyse it to determine its properties as shown in the previous examples. You will need to determine the following in your analysis:
• bonding type
• a list of properties that support your choice of bonding
• any unexpected properties for the bonding type and a brief explanation for these.
Your analysis should be recorded in the tables provided. Just click in the area to add your response or use the drop down menu where provided.
Safety
Eye protection should be worn.
Take special care when heating any sample. Make sure you heat only a small amount, over a heat proof surface. Handle hot things with care and ensure good ventilation. If you are in any doubt as to whether or not to heat something, do not heat it or check with your teacher first.
Be careful when testing things for hardness. You do not have to hit them very hard. Test only a small sample. A small tap with a hammer or blunt object is sufficient.
For substances from Group 4, except salt, you should wear disposable gloves and wash your hands thoroughly after handling.
