Question: The third approach to collecting data for this study was a qualitative document analysis. This approach explored how a review of documents could inform the problem of low-test scores in English among fourth graders at Simpson Central Elementary School in Mississippi. Documents are the data that informs teaching, then drives instruction (Stoffer, 2017), and track progress over time to determine whether or not interventions have the desired effect and whether or not further action is required. Document analysis is a process of interpreting, gathering, and analyzing data from documents. This type of analysis involves looking at various documents related to the problem to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the issue. Through this process, the school hopes to understand better the problem of low test scores in English amongst fourth graders and identify possible solutions that can be implemented to improve the situation. The qualitative document analysis has provided a great deal of insight into the problem of low English test scores at Simpson Central Elementary School. Through this process, it has been possible to identify several possible solutions to maximize student success.
