Assignment Brief:
Complete an individual Video Game Design Criticism. You will interview players from a specific demographic and evaluate a video game from many perspectives. Please note, this is a combination of an opinion piece and an academic criticism.
In order to gain maximum benefit from this assignment we recommend you select a game that fits within the player demographic for your Assignment 3. Each group member is to choose a different game. The total time you should dedicate to this project is approximately 40 hours-that includes in class learning and self-directed time.
You will:
- Interview at least two people from your player demographic and summarise your findings.- Choose a video game based on your player demographic. Ensure your chosen game is easy to access for your research.- Analyse whatelements in that game you believe are successful. Discuss why.- Analyse what elements you believe are not successful. Discuss why.
You will also provide an academic criticism of the game:
- Describe the MDA Framework and discuss the three layers of MDA in relation to your game.- Discuss how people create meaning from visual information and define key visual elements in your game.

Assignment hand-in: Assignments submitted after the due date and time without having received an extension through Special Assessment Circumstances (SAC) will be penalised according to the following: • 10% of marks deducted if submitted within 24hrs of the deadline • 20% of marks deducted if submitted after 24hrs and up to 48hrs of the deadline • 30% of marks deducted if submitted after 48hrs and up to 72hrs of the deadline • No grade will be awarded for an assignment that is submitted later than 72hrs after the deadline. • Students submitting assignments after the due date and time will be ineligible to resubmit a failed assignment.
For a C grade, range (50%—64%): The work exhibits average critical thinking skills and exhibits an average level intellectual standards across most measures. The work shows insight of design elements in the selected game but minimal attempt at going beyond the frameworks provided in class. For a D grade, range (40% - 49%): Work exhibits minimal critical thinking skills and falls short against several intellectual standard measures. The work has missing elements. For an E grade, range (0% - 39%): Work exhibits minimal critical thinking skills and falls short against many intellectual standard measures. The work has many missing elements.
Submission Details: This is an individual assignment. You must work on the individual tasks by yourself and all work on these tasks must be your own. When submitting the work via the Moodle as part of your assessment submission you agree that the work is your work and your work alone. Marking Criteria: For an A grade, range (80%—100): The work exhibits excellent critical thinking skills and exhibits high level intellectual standards. The game design criticism show a great deal of subject knowledge and insight as well as personal engagement with the subject matter. The student uses their own experiences and work to highlight how game design elements are used to engage players. The student uses many elements and concepts beyond those provided in class. For a B grade, range (79%—65%): The work exhibits good critical thinking skills and exhibits a good level intellectual standards across many measures. The work shows good understanding and insight into game design used for the traditional game. The student uses some elements and concepts beyond those provided in class.
