Scenario
You are employed by a public service organisation of your choice. Your manager wants you to develop a better understanding of the complexities of managing a public services organisation, and he has requested you to take the module ‘Organisational Structures and Culture' in DGHE, as part of your continuous professional development.
A public service organisation is defined as any organisation that is owned and operated by the government and exists to provide services to the citizens of a country. This includes the emergency services (police, fire, ambulance...), military (army, navy, air force...), security and welfare (courts, prison, NHS...), government (central, regional, local), and supporting organisations (charities, social enterprises, voluntary groups...)
Task 1
You need to create a report that analyses one public service organisation of your choice (ideally it should be an organisation you are considering working for once you graduate). The report will have two sections:
Section 1: Organisational Structure, Culture, and Politics
1. Assess the organisational structure and map out the organisational chart.
2. Analyse the role of organisational culture and how it influences employee behaviour in organisations.
3. Explain the impact of local government and central government policies to your selected organisation.
4. Assess of monitoring and accountability in your selected organisation, by considering the relevance of chain of command, span of control, lines of authority and centralisation/decentralisation to ensure effective management of public resources.
Section 2: Managing the Public Sector
1. Analyse management approaches and styles in your given organisation and illustrate with examples.
2. Evaluate the concept of motivation and how it applies to public service organisations.
3. Using one reflective tool that you have studied in class, evaluate the importance of the concept of organisational behaviour to the performance of teams in the public sector.
