Assignment Overview
In this assignment, you will employ the PEST, SWOT and Porter's Five Forces models to answer the following question: should Swinburne abandon the physical campus model and transition all of its teaching operations to online? A description of the modelling tasks and recommendation is provided below.

A note on the industry authenticity of the assignment: these modelling tools have been around for three decades and are still widely used in industry today. They are essentially heuristics but they are very effective tools for generating thinking, discussion and action (go/ no go, further analyses required, etc.).

As professionals, you need to have a mastery over basic tools such as these. Just because something is old does not mean it is not fit-for-purpose.

ASSIGNMENT TASKS

1. PEST model
a) Analyse the macro-environmental (Political, Economic, Social and Technological) forces that are driving universities to adopt online delivery models.

2. SWOT model
a) Analyse the Strengths (internal competencies [incl. learning management systems], expertise, service modes, brand, etc.) of Swinburne that will enable it to become a purely online provider.
b) Analyse the Weaknesses (i.e. constraints) within Swinburne that will inhibit its ability to become a purely online provider (e.g. continued focus on F2F teaching, pricing structures, overheads).
c) Analyse the market Opportunities for Swinburne which make the transition to purely online delivery an attractive proposition (think about the post-COVID world).
d) Analyse the market Threats that could affect: 1) Swinburne's ability to offer online delivery, and 2) take a market leadership position in online teaching.

3. PORTER'S FIVE FORCES
a) What steps can Swinburne take to reduce the Threat of New Entrants, the Threat of
Substitute Products, the Bargaining Power of Customers (i.e. students), and the Bargaining
Power of Suppliers (i.e. third parties, contractors and sessional staff)?

4. RECOMMENDATION
a) Four sentences only. In industry, no-one wants to read a lengthy document. In many cases, when you're committing something to paper, you are telling people what they need to know - that's all.

b) This task is about succinctness.
1. Sentence 1 - Simply state your recommendation: should Swinburne abandon the physical campus model and transition all of its teaching to online?

2. Sentence 2 - Based on your PEST analysis, what is the key takeaway in support of your recommendation.
3. Sentence 3 - Based on your SWOT analysis, what is the key takeaway in support of your recommendation.
4. Sentence 4 - Based on your Porter's Five Forces model what is the key takeaway in support of your recommendation.

4. REFERENCES
References are essential in your academic work. Remember to give credit to the sources you used and include in-text citations to support your ideas. At the end of your assignment, provide a list of references in Harvard Referencing format.
