Background to Assessment
Today, increasing evidence exists that an organisation's constituents are rewarding companies that are environmentally responsible, and doing their bit to preserve the planet (Argenti 2016).
Environmentally responsible behaviour cannot only attract consumers, it can also offer enormous cost savings for companies willing to make the upfront investment in environmentally responsible practices. Yet the strongest of corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategies are lacking if they do not include a clear communications component.
Your boss, the CEO of Sunshine 100, is keen to understand how the company can actively engage in CSR messaging to ensure consistency and integration with its overall communication and reputation management strategy. She has asked your team to review a number of companies from four different industries and report back on the different types of sustainability initiatives reported and communication media utilised.
Individual: Long report
1. Working in teams of four choose one company per industry sector (retail, technology equipment, food/beverage, and consumer goods) per team member.
2. Answer the following four questions in your individual report section:
Q1. Using the company's social media platform and current CSR report:
• Evaluate the company's corporate website. How 'green' is it? (Table 1)
• Analyse the attributes of the CSR report and identify two sustainability initiatives for 2018 (Table 2)
Please note the results of Q2 (i) will be presented in two Tables. Follow the provided prompt questions located on BB under A4 to complete the required analysis. See PPT slides 6 and 7. A template for each table will be provided.
The focus of Qs 2, 3 and 4 is communicating about CR.
Q2. Why is it important for a company to develop an ongoing and active dialogue with consumers, shareholders, and the general public about the social and environmental role companies should play?
Q3. What can happen when there is a lack of dialogue?
Q4. What are the dangers of 'empty boasting' when a company trumpets actions not necessarily backed by substance.
Identify any two corporate examples and evaluate what the false and hollow claims were and what impact they had on the company's constituents as well as their image, reputation and credibility.
See Slides 8, 9 and 10 for key points for Qs 2, 3 and 4
Report
Abstract
An abstract must be fully self-contained and make sense by itself, without further reference to outside sources or to the actual paper. Its purpose is to state the intentions in writing the report and provide a brief outline of the overall aim, the relevance or importance of your work, key findings and the main conclusions and recommendations.
It is a well-developed single paragraph of approximately 150/200 words in length.
The function of the abstract is to outline briefly all parts of the paper.
Although it is placed at the beginning of your paper, immediately following the title page, the abstract should be the last thing that you write, once you are sure of the conclusions you will reach.
