Assignment Brief
Scenario
You have been working as a trainee civil engineer for a small family-owned construction firm. Much of the work of this firm has been in private residential work, but under new management there is a desire to begin to undertake larger non-domestic work. For this change to be managed effectively, the company will need to change its structure. The new management team are keen to maintain a good relationship with the existing staff and include them in the progression process. For all the employees of the company to understand the need for the company to change and modernise they have requested that you produce a report:
Tasks
Section 1- analyse how the construction industry has developed through history in terms of structure, employees, contracted work and business ethos. This should highlight the links between the different professions involved in the industry and identify the types of contractual work tendered by companies.
Section 2 - the different types of construction company structures, a discussion of the tender process and how companies relate to each other in the process. Compare the main factors which differentiate how companies may select which contracts and tenders they compete for. (e.g. consider tender process open/closed tender lists)

As part of your role as a trainee civil engineer, as the company look to modernise, you have been asked to produce a report looking at modern techniques such as BIM and how collaboration strategies can be developed to improve health and safety.
Tasks
Section 1- analyse how the construction industry has evolved in terms of innovation of construction methods and contracts. The areas they would like to consider are:
Master programmes and contract planning techniques
The role of BIM on construction (look for opportunity for integration with unit 6) Modern procurement methods
Sustainability
Section 2 - Demonstrate how the construction industry has benefitted from changes in health and safety legislation. This should identify the major pieces of health and safety legislation which impact on construction projects, explain how health and safety is now an integrated part of a construction process and discuss how collaboration and communication are vital in ensuring a safe working environment.
Finally, as part of the staff development your employer has requested that you provide a 10-minute presentation for all the employees which evaluates the impact of health and safety legislation, how it has evolved, the drivers for it and what you see as the advantages and disadvantages. (optional)
