Task Description:
Topic: Are whiter teeth healthier?
A key learning objective of this course is for you to develop a comprehensive understanding of the biological and physical sciences and apply this knowledge to a dental context. An additional learning objective of this course is for you to develop teamwork and communication skills, specifically learning how to adjust your communication style to suit different audiences.
In this assessment, you will find literature relevant to a chosen dental science myth, and then systematically analyse this literature to evaluate the strengths of the claims made and develop your own written argument that supports or debunks the myth. Your chosen myth cannot be on the topic of fluoride.
The purpose of this assessment task is three-fold:
• To document your ability to produce an accurate written report, in the form of a 1000-word commentary, explaining the science underpinning a popular science myth relevant to dentistry and that you may encounter via your patients in your future professional practice.
• To assess your ability to evaluate the arguments and integrate evidence from the chosen peer-reviewed literature and any other sources of evidence you choose to support your own argument.
• To provide feedback on your skills in formal academic writing, including overall structure, logical progression, flow, paragraph structures, and use of an appropriate citation style, before you complete your final year research project.
You are expected to use a variety of resources to justify your argument. You should include a minimum of 8-10 references in your written commentary. This is to give you the opportunity to demonstrate that you have explored the literature on your topic to develop a well-rounded argument. Remember that paraphrasing must be referenced appropriately.
When writing your commentary, it is important to think about "What is my message?" and "Who is my audience?" as answers to these questions will not only influence what you write but how you construct your argument. The key is to write a persuasive argument. For this assessment task, your audience is a dental colleague. Your dental colleagues have the same health and science literacy as you and hence you can include scientific and technical language in your written commentary.
Your written commentary should be a general critique of the research related to your chosen dental science myth, either confirming the myth is in fact true OR debunking the myth. It should provide an introduction to the myth, a balanced analysis of evidence and a concluding paragraph. Your report should be informative enough that if a patient was to ask your dental colleague about the myth, your colleague could use your written commentary to learn about the scientific basis of the myth and then explain it to their patients.
