MATERIALS AND MATERIALS SELECTION to do this task.
You are required to independently write a report in no more than 1500 words (A report of approximately 1000 words is recommended) to analyse and justify popular material selections in the oil & gas pipeline and SWRO industries.
Question: Explain and justify the fact that carbon steels such as X65 are commonly selected as materials for high pressure underground oil and gas pipelines, while super duplex stainless steels such as SAF 2507 (also called SS2507) are commonly selected as materials for high pressure components in SWRO (sea water reverse osmosis) desalination plant.
You are required to independently write a report in no more than 1500 words (A report of approximately 1000 words is recommended) to analyse and justify popular material selections in the oil & gas pipeline and SWRO desalination industries. You need to carry out literature research and make appropriate use of your chemistry, physical and materials knowledge in a creative manner. You may also need to find and use relevant materials property data and charts from the literature in order to address the following specific questions:
1. Identify three key materials properties that are required for the high pressure oil & gas pipeline.
2. Explain and justify the fact that carbon steels such as X65 is a suitable material for high pressure oil& gas pipelines.
3. What main weaknesses do carbon steels such as X65 have as materials for the high pressure oil and gas pipeline?
4. Identify three key materials properties that are required for high pressure components of SWRO desalination structures.
5. Explain the fact that super duplex stainless steels such as SS2507 are commonly selected as materials for high pressure components in SWRO desalination plant.
6. What main weaknesses do normal stainless steels such as SS304 have as materials for high pressure components in SWRO desalination plant?
