Analogue Electronics (B30EI) Coursework Exercise 2011

The report should contain all of the information detailed below together with your analysis of the circuit and any conclusions. The report should contain the code for your simulation as an appendix to the report.

The table below gives the parameters that you each have to satisfy for your design.

For this exercise the input voltage is coming from a photovoltaic generated DC supply and you are required to design a buck converter that will step down the voltage to supply a piece of equipment. Each of you have a specified input voltage, output voltage, maximum value of output ripple and load resistance. The switching frequency you choose must lie in the range 50 kHz to 200 kHz.

You are required to design a circuit to meet these specifications. A circuit diagram for your circuit should be provided. Details of the calculations you made for the design should be included. You are not required to design a closed loop system simply an open loop circuit that steps down the voltage.

You should specify the following:

  • the switching frequency
  • the duty cycle of the system
  • the values of other required components

You should provide results of a simulation of your circuit to indicate its overall performance. The choice of simulation tool to use is up to you.

You may assume you have ideal devices available or you may choose actual devices.

The marks will be broken down with 40% of the marks for your design calculations (clearly stating what assumptions you make). Another 40% will be for your simulation results and any updates you make to your original design based on these simulations. The remaining 20% will be for critical analysis and conclusions you draw from the whole exercise.
