Expectations for this assignment:

You have been asked to submit an essay in which you assess the historical strengths and weaknesses of the World Health Organization and the ways in which it might be reformed. This essay will allow you to demonstrate your ability to research a contemporary international health problem, your critical thinking, and your capacity to develop and sustain an argument. Your ability to communicate effectively will also be assessed.

This assignment is modelled on an actual recruitment exercise for applicants short-listed for a health position in an international governmental organization.

Context

In its July 2015 report to the World Health Organization, the Ebola Interim Assessment Panel criticized the organization's performance and concluded that "WHO must re-establish its pre- eminence as the guardian of global public health" (p.5). The case of Ebola is a further instance of WHO being criticized over a number of years for failing to meet its mandate.

"Despite overseeing a number of successful global health initiatives, the World Health Organization must be reformed if it is to regain its pre-eminence as the guardian of global public health".
