Please briefly explain the idea behind or of the following text:
Americans over time have changed their views on how they see life. For example, if we look back at the 1900s when everyone could finally vote, meaning all women and black men were finally allowed to have a say in politics, we see how they were motivated and wanted to be able to vote, they wanted their voices to be heard. These strong and motivated people fought hard to be able to have a say in the government so it's hard to see how we went from fighting and risking our lives just to have a say to how things are now, where nobody really cares about voting. The reason is much greater than just one straightforward answer but education truly isn't it. Education does play a factor but doesn't even come close to the main reason why people don't vote. With today's technology, anyone could simply google who's running for office, what politicians believe in what, and what their record looks like in the political field. Still, the missing spark is the interest in doing so. In today's world, politicians are seen as liars, they say they'll do one thing for the community but it's all for votes, in fact, many Americans feel like politicians lie, according to Pew Research Center "Only two-in-ten Americans say they trust the government". With the amount of distrust in politicians, it's hard to see why anyone would want to go out and spend their time casting a vote for someone who isn't going to help them like they said they would. Americans' knowledge of politics hasn't increased because Americans are simply tired of being let down time and time again by politicians, they have given up on our democracy. However, Democracy survives because the choice to vote is still there, even though many Americans aren't interested and have given up, there are those who have not and will continue voting, democracy means having that choice. Democracy also means being able to protest and demand change from people above local politicians, like congress and the president. Local governments may affect people's lives on a daily basis but when change isn't made, the next local government official will continue to make the same promises the previous politicians made. It's clear that Americans want equality and things that go further than who runs the local government, Americans want real change. Proof of this is with protesters like BLM or Women who want Roe v Wade to be put back into place, local government isn't whom these people are trying to reach, they want their voices to be heard by congress, and they want real change. The lack of belief in the local government exists because of lies and false promises made to never be fulfilled, more change is being seen when people protest. therefore, why would any Americans go vote in local government elections? Democracy will always live on in other ways, but when it comes to voting in local government, nobody is interested in repeatedly hearing lies or the same tale. Americans in general simply don't care for politics, if Americans' interest in politics and trust in politicians were increased then we would see a mass surge in voting turn-ups.
