As a part of the American Corrections system's switch to a rehabilitative approach, prisons have taken new steps to serve inmates. Inmates deserve to have the opportunity to have a chance to change their lives and outlooks. They also deserve the chance to acquire the skills to make them more productive citizens, leaders and educators of those who may be headed down the same path.

Educational programs that offer inmates the chance to finish high school or college, give these inmates a foundation on which to build. Other jobs skills or vocational programs do the same and give inmates a path to follow upon release from prison. These programs along with drug treatment behavioral health treatment programs help reduce recidivism. The lower the likelihood of an inmate returning to prison, the lower the prison population. Inmates also learn life skills and even those who aren't looking forward to release learn to live more peacefully among each other while inside.
