Question: On this occasion I have chosen Eye Cancer (Ocular Melanoma). Ocular melanoma is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the eye. Signs of ocular melanoma include blurred vision or a dark spot on the iris. Ocular melanoma is the most common type of cancer that develops within the eyeball in adults, but it is still fairly rare. Melanomas that start in the skin are much more common than melanomas that start in the eye. Melanomas develop from pigment-making cells called melanocytes. (American Cancer Society, 2023). Ocular melanoma begins in the middle layer of the three layers of the eye wall. The outer layer includes the sclera (the white part of the eye) and the transparent cornea at the front of the eye. The inner layer is covered by a nervous tissue called the retina; it detects light and sends images to the brain via the optic nerve. The symptoms of eye cancer are complete or partial loss of sight, blurred vision, lump on the eyelids or around the eye, seeing spots or flashes of light or wiggly lines in front of your eyes and a dark spot on the colored part of the eye (the iris) that is getting bigger. Treatments for eye cancer are surgery, radiotherapy (the use of high doses of radiation) and chemotherapy. (Cancer Research UK, 2022). The American Cancer Society's estimates for eye cancer in the United States for 2023 are: About 3,490 new cancers (mainly melanomas) of the eye and orbit and is more common in affecting men more than women.
