Bernie worked part-time for EuroDelight, a chain of mid-market family restaurants offering a range of Western dishes. The kitchen was a very good work environment but after the commis chef in charge of the buffet operation left and a new one came in, everything changed. The new commis only had basic culinary skills and the chefs did not treat him very well for that reason. Not happy with the commis's performance, the chefs would verbally abuse him, and none of the part-timers would respect him.

Since the buffet operation is usually busy on weekends, the kitchen hires part-timers to assist the commis chef and the kitchen operation. Last week when I was working there part-time, there was only one chef de partie in addition to the commis. The only job is the buffer operation and the mise-en-place for the next day.

When the commis didn't follow instructions on how to cook the fried noodles, the chef de partie scolded him very badly. Feeling confident I could do a better job, I offered to help the commis. However, the chef de partie told me I should mind my own business and do the job assigned to me. I argued the work I was doing was boring (cutting carrots) and that I was almost done, that the buffet operation was very busy and that a part-timer's job is to make himself or herself useful.
