Case: Functional GI disorders exist when a patient has signs and symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort that are persistent and recurrent but when labs and tests are run, everything comes back normal. Today you are going to work as a dietitian in an outpatient clinic supporting a family whose child is having difficulty with GI symptom management and being at school.
Amelia is a 9-year-old female that has been brought to you today due to difficulty with GI symptoms at school. Amelia complains of an upset stomach when she is nervous about testing or learning brand new material that she is not catching on to right away. This is sometimes followed by diarrhea, but at other times just produces severe cramping. When this happens, Amelia always asks to go to the nurse and ends up missing class. The mothers report to you that they try to get more vegetables into Amelia's diet, but she doesn't love them.
I want you to choose one of the following topics and research the effectiveness in managing symptoms of functional GI disorders:
Pre/probiotic supplements?
Fiber supplements?
Low FODMAP diet?
Foods with probiotic properties?
Low fat diet?
Are there any other general recommendations you might make for helping Amelia to manage her GI symptoms at school?
Then, share how your clinical experiences, past education, or popular/social media have influenced your understanding of gastrointestinal health. Are there any questions you have, myths you have heard circulating, or things that you wish you had learned more about?
