• Identify "gaps" in existing knowledge
• Identify major researchers in the area
• Identify areas of consent and debate
• Identify specific problems associated with research in that area
• Understand how others have defined key concepts
• Identify potential relationships between concepts
• Previous studies may inform your methodology
You must locate the research topic within existing literature/knowledge base
Importance of the a Literature Review:
- You must understand what has already been done (if anything) in the specific topic you have chosen
- You must be able to incorporate ideas from different sources and summarise these with respect to your own study
- Show awareness of appropriate research approaches, information collection methods and analytical techniques
Literature Review Process:
Literature Searching :
What different sources of information will you utilise?
• Where will you find them?
• How easy are they to access?
• Multisearch/Google Scholar?
Types of Literature Sources:
- Academic Journals
Provide up-to-date, detailed and rigorous reports on research in your subject area. Refereed journals acknowledged as the ‘best' source of academic information
- Textbooks
These are particularly useful in terms of general ideas, theories and concepts to do with a topic. However they tend to be limited in that they can be rather dated and do not usually report on research in the area
- Company reports
Particularly useful if investigating issues related to a specific company or industry. Generally contain a lot of financial information
Types of Literature Review - continued:
- Professional bodies research or articles
These can be useful for up to date information however they are not peer reviewed. They can be a good source for accounting and finance literature reviews due to the fast pace of development. These are often found online however be aware of the reliability of the website.
- Newspapers
Information not always reported objectively; how reliable is it?
- Web
How reliable is it?
Using the Web to search for literature:
Positive aspects:
• Fast
• Convenient
• Can find related areas
• Cheap
Negative aspects:
• Questions over reliability/ authority
• Easy to miss relevant literature
• Information overload
• Plagiarism issues - must take care to write in your own words! Or use quotes, use Turnitin as a tool.
Planning the Search:
Scope
Is it background information, a theory or concept that is relevant to your study, a research approach, findings from previous research etc.?
Time-scale
How far back is the information of relevance? Do you need this to be up-to-date, historical, or over a particular time period?
Range
Do you need local information, regional, national or international? Can you source the required information if very localised or if very globalised?
Doing the Search:
- Identify subject or keywords that you will look up
- Use library catalogues, the Internet, and information databases
- Be systematic and methodical and always keep notes and records of what you find
- Broaden or narrow your search based on the number of ‘hits' you achieve
- Expand your list of keywords when new ones are identified
- Keep a note of the full Harvard Reference for all sources you may use in your Dissertation
