ALM102 Making Video Assignment - Video Project, Deakin University, Australia
This task requires you to create a 6-8 minute informational video that engages with one of the Digital Media Contexts covered in Weeks 4-7 in critical and creative ways. You must embed this video from YouTube into a blog post and include in this post a 700-800 word written reflection on the decision-making and learning process you undertook for this exercise.
HOW TO FOCUS YOUR VIDEO -
Your video must respond to one of the following topic statements relating to a Digital Media Context:
Week 4 - A balanced perspective is the key to understanding the contemporary surveillance society in which we live.
Week 5 - New technologies have transformed how concepts of 'reality' and 'immersion' have been traditionally understood.
Week 6 - The rapid spread of AI's practical applications is not only occurring for different reasons, but also entails positive and negative implications.
Week 7 - Digital media has seen new divides form and old divides grow wider, but can also be used to diminish the divides that separate us.
These topics are very broad and aim to guide your thinking about a context to some degree, but also enable as much flexibility as possible for you to be creative and play to your interests
With the above flexibility in mind, you should aim to identify, research, and explore one or more themes/issues/examples of interest relating to your topic.
A general discussion without specifics won't allow you to construct a very compelling argument in relation to your context.
You don't have to explicitly say anywhere in the video 'I am looking at the topic...' (keep your potential audience broad - it's a student assignment but it doesn't have to be presented that way to the world)
You must demonstrate reading and research within your video
- To help you reflect on your context/topic critically, you must draw on at least two scholarly sources in your video
- It's important that you clearly and explicitly refer to your sources within your video - quoting or paraphrasing works well, and referring to sources by author name is generally best
- You don't have to read what would usually go in an in-text citation (i.e. Smith 2016, p. 17)
- Include your list of scholarly sources using the Harvard referencing system in the video's credits, YouTube description box, and at the end of your blog post
- You may draw on websites, news media articles, blog posts, etc. as sources where relevant and useful, although these don't count as scholarly (peer-reviewed) research.
HOW TO MAKE YOUR VIDEO -
You have been asked to create an informational video, which will require you to clearly convey key information by being analytical and constructing an argument
- You can't simply be descriptive, tell a story, go on a rant, or provide unsubstantiated opinions not backed up by research
Do not attempt to cover too much in your video - you will find that 6-8 minutes is not a very long time!
- The usual 10% leeway isn't relevant here due to the more generous range provided
- 8 minutes is the absolute maximum length for your video, which includes the end credits!
You should think of the previous two Video Exercise assessments as building your knowledge and skills cumulatively for this project - in other words, your final video will be assessed with all of the unit's topics and resources in mind
- With the above point in mind, at least some part(s) of your video should involve you speaking to camera and some parts should incorporate the use of overlay footage, music, etc.
The main video-making competencies/strategies we will be looking at for this task include:
- Planning
- Framing and positioning
- Shot composition
- Engagement with audience
- Audio quality
- Editing
- Selection of appropriate source material
- Use of overlays
- Juxtaposition of images and sound
- Use of music
WHAT TO INCLUDE IN YOUR BLOG POST -
Embed your video into a blog post on your Wordpress site (do not simply provide a hyperlink to your video in your post)
Include in this post a 700-800 word written reflection on the following:
- The argument you wanted to convey in relation to your chosen context/topic and decisions about what kind of content/messages/meanings you included to support this (approx. 100 words)
- Strategies relating to planning, framing and positioning, shot composition, engagement with audience, recording audio, editing, selection of appropriate source material, use of overlays, use of music, and so on that you employed in your video (approx. 500 words)
- Lessons you learned, challenges you encountered, and how you resolved any problems you faced (approx. 200 words)
You may use the first person ('I', 'my') when writing the reflection.
Remember the (potential) audience of a blog post is the world, not just your marker - try to frame your writing in a way that's accessible to all. Make this a valuable portfolio output, not just an assignment for a single marker!
