Supervising Friends

You are the supervisor of several employees. Many of these employees were your best friends. You have just been promoted above all your peers and co-workers into the supervision role. You have all worked together for many years, you all hung out together, and you all applied for the supervisor’s role. You were the lucky one to be promoted. Now that you are the leaders, your “friends” are behaving poorly. They are coming in late, slacking on the job, and not really listening to you. Some comments you have been getting when you say something are: “you are my friend, why are you treating me like this”, or “you used to come in late with us, why are you not yelling at us” and “you cannot reprimand me, we are friends”.
