Discussion: Aligning ICD-11 With a DSM-5-TR Diagnosis

Another important tool in diagnosis is the ICD-11-the International Classification of Diseases-which is from the World Health Organization. The goal of the WHO is to ensure consistent measurement of disorders across the world. For example, do the U.S. and India measure substance-related and addictive disorders the same way? 

In some cases, disorders may appear in the ICD-11 that do not appear in the DSM-5-TR. However, you still need to make a diagnosis that aligns with the DSM-5-TR. But how is that accomplished in practice?

In this Discussion, you apply a diagnosis for something not in the DSM-5-TR but classified as a disorder by WHO in the ICD-11.

To Prepare

• Find a scholarly article on  the following disorders that are in ICD-11 but not in the DSM-5-TR:
  • Internet gaming disorder
• Use the ICD-11, accessed from the World Health Organization (2019) resource in the Learning Resources, to research symptoms and classifications for these disorders.

• Summarize the primary characteristics of the disorder you researched.
• Identify which assessment tool you would use to verify these disorders.
• Explain the considerations to examine in order to make a diagnosis if you have a client with this disorder.
