Procedure: Administration of Oral Medications
Objective: Having been provided with a physician's order, an oral medication, and the necessary equipment and supplies, you are to correctly administer an oral medication.
Directions: S stands for Satisfactory. U stands for Unsatisfactory. In the time allowed, complete the procedural steps listed below. You will need to obtain a satisfactory mark for this procedure in order to pass this class.
Procedural Steps:
1. Verified the physician's order.
2. Followed the "Seven Rights."
3. Performed a medical asepsis handwash.
4. Worked in a well-lighted, quiet, clean area.
5. Assembled equipment and supplies.
6. Obtained the correct medication.
7. Compared the medication label with the order (first time).
8. Checked the expiration date.
9. Calculated dosage, if necessary.
10. Compared the medication label with the order (second time).
11. Correctly prepared: (a, b, or c)
a. Multiple-dose solid medication
b. Unit dose medication
c. Liquid medication
12. Compared the medication label with the order (third time).
13. Transported medicine to the patient.
14. Identified the patient. Explained the procedure.
15. Assessed the patient. Took vital signs if indicated.
16. Assisted patient to a comfortable position.
17. Provided water, milk, or juice (unless contraindicated).
18. Administered the medication. Made sure the patient took the medication.
19. Provided for the patient's safety: Observed the patient for any adverse reactions.
20. Documented the procedure.
21. Care for equipment and supplies according to OSHA guidelines.
22. Washed hands.
