Question

The irrigating of agricultural land remains the largest user of water globally, a trend encouraged by the fact that farmers in most countries do not pay for the full cost o the water they use. Agriculture irrigation accounts for 70% of water use worldwide and over 40% in many European, North, and South American countries. Intensive groundwater pumping of water for irrigation results in scarcity and depletion of aquifers, negative environmental outcomes, and significant economic impact on the agricultural sector. In addition, agriculture remains a major source of water pollution; agricultural fertilizer run-off, pesticide use and livestock effluents all contribute to the pollution of waterways and groundwater. Discuss the possible consequences of the current water rights challenges in developing nations. What should governments do to confront the waterways pollution issues in developing nations?
