I believe it is right to manufacture to a need. However, it could make or break your business. I believe it is right to manufacture to need a need because that's how business can separate themselves from their competition. When starting a business most people usually start with either solving a problem or following a passion. Passion projects don't always pan out, but when you manufacturer to a need you have a better chance of being profitable in the short term, but long term would need fool proof strategy. Using covid as an example, there was a need of multiple products such as masks, sanitizers, dispensers etc. Some people created their own products or service for the greater good such as contactless delivery for restaurants. Restaurants needed to adapt to their business model and be agile enough to figure out a way to continue to service their customers. The restaurants that were able to adapt thrived with contactless delivery or additional capacity by being creative with their parking lots. These are examples of manufacture to a need for the greater good of your business. On the other hand, there were a handful of people that decided to manufacture for a need that was unethical. Some of the unethical ways people manufactured to needs were in the hand sanitizer and masks markets. When covid first started, masks and hand sanitizer were immediate needs for all companies to continue to function. Some people decided to stock up on these items and sell them at a premium. I recall companies that were selling masks for a couple dollars a piece in March/April of 2020 and now they are trying to give them away for pennies to make some of their money back. Another product that was manufactured to a need, but ended up price gauging consumers was hand sanitizer. Many breweries were involved in the hand sanitizing business and tried to make up for loss sales while their bar areas were closed during covid.
Overall, I have been in this position as my company decided to design and launch a mobile hand washing station sink to be used in hospitals and arenas. The project started early in 2021 and was completed by the fall of 2021. When we first started the project I voiced my opinion that we are late to the market and were looking to manufacture to a need at a high cost. I didn't think we were in a position to launch this project successfully and we were following the heard. My voice was overridden by management and we decided to pursue further. The project has now launched and we have sold a total of 2 items when we expected to sell hundreds over the course of the year. This was a case of manufacture to a need and being late to the market.
