Case study-Aging in the United States
Interview an individual over the age of 60 who is a member of a minority demographic, and grew up in the United States (at least from the age of 12). This could be ethnicity (non-white), religion (non-christian), or type of ability (physical disability or challenge). There are many diverse demographics in this part of Florida- You may identify a demographic other than one of these, but you should get approval from the instructor prior to writing the paper. You do not need to tape record this interview. You should be prepared to share the name and contact information of the person with the Instructor, and you should have permission from the individual for the Instructor to contact him/her to verify the assignment, if needed. You do NOT need to identify the person in your paper, or to share very personal details of their story.
Using active listening, empathy, perception checking, and practicing clarifying information and reflection, engage the individual in telling his/her story of growing up and thriving as an adult in the United States. Avoid being judgmental, blaming, or moralizing. Be respectful, and really listen to the lived experience of this person.
