Some conditions that are coded from various chapters of the ICD-10-CM Code Book can aggravate or complicate pregnancy and thus are coded from Chapter 15 when those conditions occur in a patient who is pregnant. For example, a kidney-infection is assigned N15.9 but for a pregnant patient, a kidney infection would be coded from subcategory O23.0. For this discussion, locate main term pregnancy in the index to Diseases and injuries and indented under that, locate the sub term complicated by, and then review the sub terms that are indented under complicated by. From those sub terms, identify five conditions that can be coded to other chapters of the ICD-10-CM Code Book if the patient were not pregnant. For each of those five conditions, specify the following. The condition The code (or category or subcategory) that would be assigned for a patient who is not pregnant.
