You are the nurse at an aged care facility. Mr Geoffrey Sunshine is an 89-year-old man with history of CVA, HTN, AF, T2DM. Mr Sunshine requires assistance with his ADLs due to a left sided hemiparesis. You are assisting Mr Sunshine with his breakfast when you notice he is coughing after every swallow. What do you do next: Immediately stop feeding Mr Sunshine, assess his level of consciousness and check his vital signs. Inform your RN and the doctor. Keep Mr Sunshine NBM and refer speech pathologist for review. Keep feeding Mr Sunshine at a slower pace. It's very important he eats his breakfast as he is a diabetic patient. Encourage Mr Sunshine to drink plenty of fluids to wash down the food. Go to the kitchen and get some scrambled eggs instead.
