After much back and forth during the election of 1876, the republican governor of Ohio, Rutheford B. Hayes was elected as president. During his election he had made promises that made up the Compromise of 1877 which ended the Reconstitution era. One thing this included was that Republicans would remove troops from the South. Doing this allowed Southern Democrats to regain power in the south. The troops that were stationed in the south were helping to protect the African Americans. Without the troops there and the south back in power, there was racial discrimination and segregation. Ultimately this led to the development of the "Jim Crow Laws" which "required the separation of whites from "persons of color" on public transportation, in schools, parks, restaurants, theaters and other locations". Although the Compromise of 1877 was the end the Reconstitution era, it did not help to protect the rights of African Americans. They were not allowed to vote or have many of the same rights as whites in the area. This also led to an increase in crimes against African Americans during this time.
