Toni Harris, an African American student-athlete featured in a recent Super Bowl commercial and on the Today Show last week, is one of the first women to be awarded a collegiate football scholarship to play next Fall at Central Methodist University in Fayette, MO. Woods (2011) details in Chapter 8 of your text of how Title IX made it a legal requirement for colleges/universities to provide equal opportunities across the board for female and male student-athletes (scholarships, facilities, coaching staff, academic resources). Despite this great feat, football has come under fire for being the cause of long-term physical disabilities, notable from CTE which can lead to personality changes, dementia, memory loss, Alzeimer's and brain damage-- even starting from college play.
