Question

The 2010 Affordable Care Act (ACA) allowed young adults up to the age of 26 to remain on their parent's health insurance plan. This has increased the rates of insurance coverage for this age group but may have also extended concerns regarding confidentiality in obtaining sexual health services and screening for sexually transmitted infections. Chlamydia is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in young adults, particularly for women aged 18-24. Studies have shown that young adults covered by their parent's insurance are less likely to receive contraceptive care and screening for chlamydia, and they have concerns of maintaining privacy from their parents.

• What are some of the risks associated with reduced contraceptive care and STI screening?

• What other barriers to sexual health services exist for young adults?

• What are potential solutions to this problem?
