A human resource manager has been asked by a member of the city council to create an affirmative action program to train and hire Polynesians. The council woman says that Polynesians represent 10% of the city's population and most of them are unemployed. Since the company's workforce is already 15% Polynesian, she says it would be a comfortable place for them to obtain employment. How should the HR manager respond? Since the unemployment rate of Polynesians is high, the company has a responsibility to sponsor an affirmative action plan. If the company receives a legitimate request from a member of local government, it needs to comply with that request. Since the company is not a government contractor, the affirmative action guidelines do not apply to it. Since Polynesians are not underrepresented in the company's workforce, the company should not create an affirmative action program for them.
