The Illinois Nurses Association (INA) is the largest Nurses Union in Illinois, dedicated to advocating for nurse's rights while prioritizing patient care. The INA was founded in 1901 with the initial aim to develop the Nurse Practice Act requiring nurses in Illinois to be registered and led to the creation of the Board of Nurse Examiners in Illinois. The INA's mission is to provide professional representation, enhance wages and working conditions, and establish strong professional standards. The INA works to build a strong voice for nurses, negotiate favorable contracts, improve healthcare standards and accessibility, and support the professional development of its members. Membership benefits include access to staff for day-to-day support, lobbying efforts in Springfield, collective bargaining representation, opportunities to participate in political action and networking opportunities, access to continuing education courses, and workshops and seminars. According to one staff member I reached out to, members organize their workplaces and engage in collective bargaining, and once they have a contract, dues paid to the union come out to about $34 a paycheck. The INA has been instrumental in advancing healthcare policy in Illinois, including passing the Healthcare Workplace Violence Prevention.
