Question: The Part 1 & Part 2 documents collectively make up the 2006 NSW Ombudsman Report into the laws regarding the use of drug detection dogs by NSW police. This is considered the most comprehensive study into this aspect of policing that has ever been undertaken in this state.
The statutory review delved into the effectiveness of laws governing the warrantless use of sniffer dogs.
NSW police began using drug dogs in the lead up to the 2000 Sydney Olympics. The regulations set out in the 2001 Act came into effect in February 2002. And since December 2005, these powers fall under the Law Enforcement (Powers and Responsibilities) Act 2002 (NSW), also known as the LEPRA.
Students are encouraged to use this report as part of their Analysis Report (Assessment 3B).
This report is not considered an "academic/scholarly source" but can be used as a source in both Assessment 3A & Assessment 3B.
Similarly, in 2019 the NSW Coroner held an Inquest into the deaths of six patrons at a number of Music Festivals deemed to be drug related. Read from 99 onwards in relation to the issue of Drug Detection Dogs.
