Autonomy involves giving oneself a moral guide. Heteronomy is the opposite of autonomy. It means allowing oneself to be guided by rules set by others. Is it possible to be truly autonomous in this sense. The very act of living in a certain culture which promotes certain values, rules of conduct, and notions of a good life makes it seem impossible to strike a course different from one's culture.
