In Ch. 1, Brooker (2022, p. 30) discusses cloning and other modifications to the genes of plants and animals. Scientists conducted an experiment in which they introduced a gene from jellyfish that contains a bioluminescent protein called green fluorescent protein (GFP) into mice. This caused the mice to glow when exposed to UV light. They later introduced this gene into mosquitoes to help identify male and female mosquitoes in an attempt to control the mosquito population by sterilizing the males.

Take a moment to consider the possibilities of genetic research and manipulation.

1. How far might science go in the name of genetic research, and at what point should genetic research be regulated?

2. What types of ethical issues might arise from altering the genes of humans, animals, and plants?

3. Provide an example and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of genetic experimentation.
