Using the example of Biotechnology of corn that is genetically modified to be resistant to corn borer infestation. This beetle reduces yields so in response farmers had the option of spraying their fields with insecticides that indiscriminately kills a wide variety of insects. Insects in the surrounding habitat are also killed causing a ripple down effect in the food web. Transgenic corn provides farmers with a different choice that increases yields. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this biotechnology? Is this biotechnology used to help improve issues in our food system?
