Technology is a great advantage for companies and employees alike that allow for the companies to achieve more with less time or resources. "Although the explosive technology growth has increased productivity and advancement, it has also created changes in worker requirements, employee expectations and workplace changes. Technology can flatten the structure of an organization by developing functional connections that replace those vertical reporting relationships. This leads to improved communication, effective decision making, and employee empowerment at all levels of the organization." What this teaches us is companies have been able to and more so been forced to look at, review, and change their organization's structure. They also have been required to modify the communication methods as well as who is sending and receiving the information. There is not a need for many middle level supervision and management positions that were essential prior to technological advances. Additionally, with the ability to reach larger markets and operate internationally due to technological advances comes additional challenges as well. Operating internationally comes with hiring more employees and additional expenses. Also, comes language barriers and culture and customs differences. The company must ensure their employees are trained to engage with their associates from different countries properly, respectfully, and appropriately. However, even with these added challenges technology is available to assist the company with this as well. Technology continues to reduce company cost, allow for higher productivity levels, and lengthen a company's reach to new markets all around the world but with all technological changes or advances each company must evaluate how it effects their organization and if any necessary changes should be made.
