Advanced Polymer Chemistry and Physics Assignment

You are given a PA6 sample. After performing a first DSC scan at 10 °C/min to screen the thermal properties of your sample, the information from Table 1 was recorded.

Question 1. Calculate the percentage of crystallinity of the sample. The heat of fusion of the 100% crystalline PA6 is 188 J/g.

Question 2. Explain the procedure to calculate the Avramiparameters (n and Z) for the sample from Table 1 using DSC. Specify the minimum number of samples needed, thethermal DSC methodto apply to each sample, the data to extract from the DSC scans and the calculations.

Question 3. The isothermal crystallisation of PA6 was evaluated at Tc of 178 °C and the Avrami parameters obtained are presented in Table 2. Calculate the time required for Xt to reach values of 0.1, 0.2, ..., 0.9. Graph Xt vs time using the results calculated. Analyse the parameters from Table 2 and propose the possible nucleation and growth processes of the system.
