Question

A 90-year-old patient who was admitted and diagnosed with multiple organ failure had an advance directive stating to withhold all treatment. The daughter was strongly against honoring the advance directive of her father. Standing as the patient's caregiver, she expressed her intention to continue the dialysis session with her father. How should you provide the right education about the advance directive to the daughter of the patient? Inform the daughter that you will advise her father's nephrologist regarding her desire to continue dialysis as she is the next of kin. State to the daughter that you will notify her father's primary physician regarding her desire to continue dialysis. Provide vital information about the advance directive as to how it affects the provision of treatment towards her father, and the father's utmost wish to withhold dialysis, and allow communication to flow to enhance the understanding of the daughter regarding the situation.
