Design & Delivery considerations for a University Administrator Training Program Unlike more typical organizational contexts, many senior university administrators have not received formal training in management/business skills, since they tend to be drawn from the ranks of former faculty members. Supporters of this approach to university administrator selection argue that faculty member familiarity with the specific environmental considerations and culture of a university environment makes them well suited to `step up' and perform senior administrative roles in the university without supplemental training. However, critics argue that given a university's key role in society and the need for ongoing contact with many external stakeholder groups, the lack of management, financial, and other competencies by these former faculty members puts the university at a considerable disadvantage if it relies upon them to fill its key administrative appointments. They argue that the size, importance, and complexity of universities demand formal `professional' training for its administrators.
Adopt the role of an external consultant, and by incorporating your knowledge of training and development material (and your personal awareness of the university environment), discuss important training design and delivery considerations that would affect T&D programs for university administrators
