Evaluation Overview
The purpose of this assignment is to incorporate course learning to date as well as Human Resource Management tasks and considerations into a fictional case study analysis.
Background
JP's Hotels owns more than 60 hotels throughout India, where the company has operated successfully for more than 30 years. The company has decided to expand internationally and recently acquired a small hotel chain in the south-western United States, specifically central and southern California. JP's chief executive decided that half of the new hotels in the U.S. will be retained and rebranded, and the other half will be sold. This will support JP's strategic objective of growing the organization slowly to make sure that new ventures are well supported and opened on time and on budget.
JP's Hotels are considered budget accommodations; they are functional, clean and reasonably priced. Most guests stay for one to three nights and are a combination of business and leisure travellers. The hotels are typically situated in downtown locations that are easily accessible by mass transit. Tourists are attracted to these hotels in popular visitor destinations where the many local attractions mean that they will not be spending much time in their hotel rooms.
The organization is considering sending some of their existing India-based managers to the U.S. to lead the changeover of the new hotels and then manage them after they re-open. If this new overseas venture is successful, JP's may decide to acquire other small hotel groups in other U.S. states. Their 10-year plan is to own 60 hotels across the United States. This is an ambitious target, so it is important that the organization finds an effective formula to operate successfully in the U.S.
The organization has never owned hotels outside of India before and has hired you as an independent human resources management consultant to advise them on how to proceed. They provided the following information during their initial meeting:
- A majority of their existing managers said they would like a chance to work abroad.
- Many of their existing managers speak English fluently.
- The company will allow four weeks to rebrand the hotels, and the new hotels must be ready to open after that time.
- The company expects to recruit a large number of staff for the new U.S. hotels, because more than 70 percent of the employees from the acquired organization left.
Directions
Write three (3) Human Resource Management challenges that managers who transfer from India to the United States to open the new hotels will be expected to face. Further, provide possible solutions to these challenges. Your analysis should include the following sections for EACH challenge:
1. The Challenge
Clearly explain the challenge you are identifying.
2. The Theory
Clearly illustrate how the topic, model or theory (or single component thereof) may be applied to address the challenge. (you do NOT need to explain the entire topic etc., only the component of the topic that is relevant to the challenge you are addressing. For instance, you do NOT need to explain all six dimensions of Hofstede's theory, just the dimension you are applying or you can apply swot analysis theory and Maslow theory of hierarchy needs)
3. The Solution
Propose a solution that addresses the challenge and is supported by the theory.
