When it comes to national strategic documents the "ends" is a goal that is looking to be accomplished. An assessment of the nation's values. Lastly, the document should include the "means" or the powers utilized to accomplish said goals. A National Strategic Document should also be suitable in the way that it accomplishes the said mission. Acceptable so that the nation doesn't overuse certain resources and also follows the law. Finally, the document needs to be feasible, so that everything looking to be accomplished can be done with the means available.

The current National Security Strategy specifically addresses Homeland Security by addressing the efforts of preventing terrorism. As well as stating the need for increased resiliency and maintaining and improving preparation. The National Security Strategy also portrays a need for stronger border control. Protecting critical infrastructure is also addressed within the strategy. Homeland Defense is covered in the strategy as well. The strategy describes the need to protect the nation against foreign military advances as well as advanced weapon systems. Maintaining a strong military presence is also covered in the interest of homeland defense. While also mentioning the investment in new technology to improve the security of The United States.
