Learning Outcome 1: Formulate possible technical solutions to address the student-prepared design specification.
Learning Outcome 2: Prepare an industry-standard engineering technical design report.
Learning Outcome 3: Present to an audience a design solution based on the design report and evaluate tt-e solution/ presentation.
Scenario:
Your manager has handed you a brief to work on a design project for a new product that is to be released. She would like a professional design report to read before submitting the proposal to the board of directors for funding.
Activity:
With the design specification and project plan in place. it is time for the practical aspects of the project to begin. You should be working through the design process, whilst making notes and gathering resources to complete the report and prepare your presentation for your final design.
Task 1:
As per your manager's requests. you are to submit a professional engineering report. which should include:
• A title page, with the name of the project, and the name of the author.
• Any acknowledgements you wish to make.
• A table of contents.
• An introduction into the project.
• An overview of the design specification and research on the possible solutions set by the design specification.
• The main body of the report:
Any preliminary research you have done of the possible design solutions, including current design solutions.
A shortlist and description of three designs you have made, with a final, justified selection of the design you wish to put forward.
A description of any models or simulations that you have produced or which could be produced. explaining with the aid of suitable screenshots. attachments or images their effectiveness in developing a final design.
The design should also be linked back to the design specification, comparing the specification and the design.
A comparison between your design and a relevant industry standard.
• You should also include details about how the design would be manufactured. This should also consider how well it complies with any regulations. risk management. and health and safety policies in place.
• Your final design should consider both its positives and negatives, are there any current limitations to the design that would need future consideration?
• A conclusion of your work.
• Any references you have used in the report.
• An appendix with a Cause and Effect Diagram. and any other information you would like to include.
